Communities at Risk :
One of KASM 's primary functions is to assist communities with an understanding of the environmental risks and proccesses associated with minerals extraction activities in the coastal marine area including the ocean floor. KASM regularly finds that communities are unaware of mining proposals in their immediate areas. KASM also finds those communities are often unaware of the administrative and statutory processes of the Crown Minerals Act and the Resource Management Act.
Mining Permit No 52061 was issued to Utopia Horizon Investments Ltd covering an area of the beach and dune system from Carters Beach to the west of Westport through to Granity to the northwest
The West Coast Regional Council received a Resource Consent Application on 2 June 2010. Supplimentary documents here
In response to concerns raised by members of the Granity community KASM approached by email the Westland Regional Council with the view to becoming an affected party in the consent processing. KASM understands that the Regional Council is processing the application by limited notification to adjourning landowners
The following was the response:
I acknowledge receipt of your e-mail and while I accept that you are an interested group I do not accept that there would be any affect on you greater than the general public and as such do not consider your group to be an affected party. I am happy to send you a copy of the application, which I have attached, and will include your comments on the file.
If you have any further comments, please feel free to contact me.
Cheers,
Rachel

KASM considers that the application has a number of deficiencies such that no decision could be made in the circumstances
KASM is watching the developments with interest
