Crown Minerals Act Review
On 27 August 2010, Energy=20
and Resources Minister Gerry Brownlee invited feedback on the Reviewing=20
the Crown Minerals Act 1991 discussion paper. =
Submissions on=20
the paper are due by 5.00pm on Friday, 8 October =
2010.
The review specifically relates to Action 6 of the Petroleum =
Action=20
Plan, but includes both petroleum and Crown-owned mineral =
resources.
The minerals management regime
The Crown Minerals Act 1991 sets out the broad legislative =
framework for=20
the issuing of permits to prospect, explore and mine Crown-owned =
minerals within=20
New Zealand's territorial area (to 12 nautical miles off the New Zealand =
coast).=20
Crown-owned minerals include petroleum, gold, silver and uranium, and =
all=20
minerals on or under Crown land.

(excluding petroleum) and associated regulations.
What is being reviewed?
A review of the whole Crown-minerals management regime is being =
undertaken,=20
in two phases:
Phase 1: The current review and consultation looks =
at=20
specific proposals to amend the Crown Minerals Act 1991. =
Phase 2: The second phase will take place in =
early=20
2011 and will include a consultation on proposed revisions to the =
minerals=20
programmes and regulations.
